Newquay Surf Festival
It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it. The hard job in question is not working in a steel foundry, on an oilrig or indeed down t’pit. It is in fact playing records to a sun-drenched crowd on a beach at the annual Newquay Surf Festival. The beach in question is without doubt the UK surf community’s Mecca, Fistral. And this weekend it’s thoroughly jammed.

Much in the vein of last year’s event, the Strongbow residents had been given the task of hitting up the assembled mass of Oakley-ed up dudes with some fine tunage, and damnit if we were not going to oblige. With an excellent view of the huge Right Guard Xtreme half pipe skate ramp, our very own Matt Dix blended the finest in r&b, hip hop and Balearic oddities. Speakers placed strategically around the entire beach also ensured that everyone got a piece of the action.

As the final of the 4 Star men’s surf event unfolded in front of the decks, the sea became littered with wet-suited flotsam. On shore, a Glastonbury atmosphere, albeit in miniature was beginning to take over, with all manner of stalls on the beach and surf fans relaxing in the sun, checking out the toned shapes on the beach volleyball courts.

As the evening drew in, the shenanigans on the beach shuddered to a halt, only to be superseded by its evening counterpart, the official After-Comp party. Held at Buzio’s, the bar recently opened by those responsible for the Newquay ‘institution’ that is Berties nightclub, Jim Byers joined Dix at the decks for the final leg of a memorable night. Soon the place was busting with a mix of riders still flushed from the surf, laydeez and Newquay’s finest, clamouring for the dancefloor.

And so the UK’s answer to Ibiza saw a little of the Balearic, for a day at least, before the cider-endorsing contingent left the decks open to the local talent and hit the town.
